NEVER ALONE IN THE BOAT
Saints,
We read about Jesus commanding the winds and waves of a storm to be calm, and it was so.
His disciples were afraid, even to death. And Jesus responded with a question: “why are you afraid, O you of little faith?”. They didn’t quite know The Who that was in the boat with them. The One who truly had the authority in that moment.
In like manner, we can be so quick to revert back to fear and worry when a storm hits… And the question remains:
Why are we afraid, have we so little faith?
He who calmed the storm before, will do it again. The power to remain at peace and stillness in the midst of chaos, lives within us. Be still and know (Ps. 46:10)
Because of the fallenness of planet earth, the reality is that we will continue to face seasons of storm on this side of Heaven. Literally, yes, natural disasters will continue to take place, which cause so much pain and suffering. But also figuratively, we each face our own personal storms in life because of the power of sin that still operates in the air. Unfortunately, this too will continue to produce different types of suffering in our lives.
But The Great News is that in spite of all this, we can always have confidence because we are never alone in the boat. Jesus, our hope of glory remains steadfast in it. And we can know for sure that as we put our faith in Him, suddenly He will bring about a great calm. What’s also amazing is that even through the storm, He is working all things together for our good. (Rom 8:28)
So we can rejoice, yes even through the storm. Because He is working it all out for our benefit. It’s true that this doesn’t always make sense, especially in the middle of the storm, when we’re hurting… But faith is believing even when it doesn’t make sense. When the natural eye sees the opposite, our spirit rests on God’s promise.
So, when the storm hits next, do not be afraid. Remember, Jesus is in the boat with you. And He’s staying. Be still and know.
JESUS DID IT
Matthew 8:26-27
English Standard Version
26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
